The Early Origins and Development of Martial Arts

For many years, martial arts have been known as a means of self-defence or a way to improve one's physical fitness. Recently, studies have also shown that the practice involves many more benefits and advantages than was previously attributed to it. For example, it is helpful in improving the practitioners' health, self-esteem, patience, courage, respect for others, and so on. However, not many people know or are aware about the origins of martial arts.

Martial arts is said to trace its roots way back to the times of Classical Antiquity, with the development of such disciplines as gladiatorial combat, Greek wrestling, and the Pankration, which was a Greek combat sport introduced into the Greek Olympic Games in 648 B.C. In 450 B.C., the foundations of Shaolin Kung Fu were developed, which promoted the concept that the mind and the body were inseparable. A hand-to-hand combat theory which involved the integrations of "hard" and "soft" fighting techniques was introduced in China at around 5 B.C.

Today, those early forms of martial arts have evolved and produced many other diverse forms, like capoeira, jujutsu, muay thai, kendo, aikido and so on, that have become extremely popular among large numbers of individuals. People's increasing interest in martial arts could be credited to its emerging popularity in films, television shows, and video games. If we were to judge on how martial arts has greatly changed and developed over the centuries, then we can rightly say that with the continuous passage of time, it will still keep on developing and evolving.
